Ignoring Clint Eastwood's advice in "Dirty Harry" that opinions, like certain body parts, are best kept to yourself.
It's Getting Older Than We Think Out There

Jay North rose to fame as a child, playing Dennis Mitchell in the ''Dennis the Menace'' sitcom that ran from 1959 to 1963. The actor went on to star in the movies Zebra in the Kitchen and Maya. He reprised his role in a television series based on the latter. The Dennis character was based on the newspaper comic strip created by Hank Ketcham in 1951 and is still published in at least 1,000 papers in 48 countries and in 19 languages.Jay North rose to fame as a child, playing Dennis Mitchell in the ''Dennis the Menace'' sitcom that ran from 1959 to 1963. It's getting older than we think out there. Who is next? My grandmother used to say "things happen in threes".

Recently, I had to drop three old friends from my email list, one died, the other two have been slipping into dementia and can no longer figure out their computers or smartphones.

I have to avoid some topics with a fourth, he's older than I, and because he never owned a television set, and his parents never had one, he wouldn't know who Jay North was. It is interesting to learn how many people, or events, life-long television viewers know about, and those who didn't have such a device in their lives don't know about much of that.

When I was six, the Dayton's department store truck pulled up in front of our house in North Minneapolis (a war-zone now) and delivered our new 13" black & white television. I think it cost my dad almost a month's pay. That evening, and I remember it was a Tuesday, because the first show we watched was comedian Milton Berle walking around on the sides of his shoes. He became known as "Mr. Tuesday Night". All, and I mean all of our neighbors came over, bringing their Samonite folding chairs to watch the first television set in the block, the living room was packed.

Great memories.

A fifth friend, someone I've known for almost 50 years, is still sharp as a tack and listens to the news every day. But he has gone almost completely blind and can no longer read emails, but says he can still "watch" television and follow along in his minds-eye.

Frontotemporal dementia affects the parts of the brain that control social skills, decision-making, and judgment. It tends to affect people between the ages of 45 and 60.

A film legend was memorialized as the nation's men announced plans to honor Val Kilmer by quoting Tombstone all day long, just like they always do. With the news of Kilmer's death, American men collectively banded together to pay tribute to the late performer by doing the same thing they do every other day - communicating almost exclusively through Tombstone quotes. The nation's wives issued a collective press release asking their husbands to stop responding to every question with ''Say when.''

My good friend Ron Braseth, retired president of the Goose River Bank in Mayville, North Dakota. Ron introduced me to Corvettes. A great human being who will be missed.

The Alaska Gold Rush town of Nome faced a bleak winter. It was hundreds of miles from anywhere, cut off by the frozen sea and unrelenting blizzards, and under siege from a contagious disease known as the ''strangling angel'' for the way it suffocated children. Now, 100 years later, Nome is remembering its saviors - the sled dogs and mushers who raced for more than five days through hypothermia, frostbite, gale-force winds and blinding whiteouts to deliver the life-saving serum.

In the context of today's arms race, the term ''hypersonic'' applies to weapons that combine Mach 5+ speed (over one mile per second) with substantial maneuverability. By comparison, traditional rocket-propelled ballistic missiles-many of which already exceed Mach 5-have limited maneuverability. And though typical cruise missiles powered by jet engines can be very maneuverable, they're generally much slower than Mach 5.

It isn't the alligators and snakes you need to worry about the most, it is the mosquitoes. Mosquitoes have killed more humans world-wide than any other creature. Dengue, also known as ''bone break fever,'' causes a variety of symptoms including fever, muscle and joint pain, nausea, and eye pain. Florida Mosquito Control teams are calling on residents to help lessen the chance of spreading dengue by tossing out basins of still water on their property, eliminating possible mosquito breeding grounds.
